Need a last-minute gift? Check out these gift ideas for the succulent grower!

A couple of years ago, Americans woke up to the fact that there’s a whole lot more to the succulent world than cacti.

No longer are succulents relegated to that dusty shelf tucked under the hanging plants at Home Depot or Lowes. And, thankfully, no longer does the selection consist of the trite, unattractive and tired varieties.

In fact, succulents have become one of the stars of Instagram.

Is this just a fad? If it is, it’s no flash in the pan. Sales of succulents began soaring back in 2012. In fact, between then and 2017, sales of succulents increased 64 percent, according to retailers surveyed by Garden Center magazine.

If you have a succulent grower in your circle of friends or family, we’ve got some gift ideas for you to help feed the interest.

2.Nope, it’s not candy

buy lithops online

They’re lithops. Related to ice plant, most folks think they look like stones. But when they’re as colorful as these, I can’t help but think of candy.

There are about 40 species of Lithops so if your succulent fan wants to start a collection, this set is a good start. The pack contains eight seedlings (started in 2017) so they’re quite tiny.

Best of all, lithops can live to be 50 years of age and may not need to be repotted for 10 to 20 years, according to Susan Mahr at wimastergardener.org. By the way, she has some brilliant care tips (not that they need a lot of care) on the website.

We love this 8-plant kit and know your succulent gardener will too.

3. An explosion of color

grow moon cactusCan you believe the colors here? If you order one moon cactus they’ll send an orange one. If you order a 4-pack, on the other hand, the growers (Fatt Plants in San Diego, California) promise that “you will  not receive duplicate colors.”

The moon cactus is the result of grafting Gymnocalycium mihanovichii onto a cactus in the Hylocereus genus (sometimes referred to as “night-blooming cactus).

Their brilliant colors are the result of a mutation, making these succulents incapable of producing chlorphyll. Kinda flies in the face about what we were told about photosynthesis in Kindergarten, right?

If your succulent-growing friend doesn’t have a couple of moon cacti, be a pal and surprise him/her with them.

What to buy: Large Grafted Moon Cactus $18.00 for one plant, $35 for a pack of four, Amazon
